What's in Season - February

What's in Season - February

Spring is here and that gives us a very optimistic feeling. I am especially looking forward to the earlier sunrise and the stretch in the evenings. In early February we are still looking at the harvested winter vegetables. I have chosen a few below and included some recipes to give a try. Weaning your baby on seasonal vegetables will help develop and broaden their pallet. Check out my Seasonal Calendar on page 44 of my Baby & Family recipe book.

1. Beetroot 🌰

Packed with essential nutrients, beetroots are a great source of fiber, folate (vitamin B9), manganese, potassium, iron, and vitamin C.

For baby option to roast, steam and purée. To offer as a finger food simply cut into finger sizes when cooked or offer grated when raw for an older baby.

2. Brussels Sprouts and Cabbage 🥬

Christmas may be gone but brussel sprouts are still very much in season. Personally I love roasting brussel sprouts with the Sunday dinner. For baby check out my Brussels sprouts and Pea purée it will definitely be a winner.

For baby steam and purée. To offer as a finger food simply steam, cut into half or quarters and allow your baby to self feed.

3. Carrot and Parsnips 🥕

Our traditional winter root vegetables. Carrots are a good source of vitamins and minerals especially Vit A. Getting your child to like the taste of Parsnips may be a little harder. Try roasting them to add some sweetness. Check out my Potato & Carrot Waffles.

For baby steam or roast root vegetables and offer as a finger food (finger size) or as a purée using the cooking liquid to thin it it out. Mixing both the carrot and parsnip is a nice way of introducing new tastes.

4. Herbs 🌿

This time of year you will find sturdy herbs like curly parsley, thyme and sage. Adding herbs to your baby’s meal can instantly change up a meal and develop your baby’s taste buds early on. Check out my detailed blog on what herbs to include.

For baby just make sure when using dried herbs they can taste a little stronger and they may add too much texture.

You can find a full seasonal calendar showing you how to serve each fruit and vegetable to your baby in my Baby & Family Book!
